Yuhki Kurihara is a composer, arranger and pianist based in Tokyo.
She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance from Toho Gakuen School of Music, where she studied piano with Nobuhito Nakai and ensemble performance with Hisano Ishioka, Kazuoki Fujii and Etsuko Tazaki.
After her studies, she began working as a composer in 2018, building a practice grounded in the structural discipline and sensibility of the classical tradition.
Her commissioned work spans music for anime, film and advertising. She has contributed to domestic and international projects for clients including The Asahi Shimbun, TOYOTA USA,
Georgia Coffee and Hermès, as well as a wide range of commercial brands and agencies.
Since 2019 she has also worked as an assistant to Kensuke Ushio, participating in music production for anime and film while continuing her own solo projects.
In parallel with commissioned work, Kurihara develops long-term personal pieces and short-form studies for piano, electronics and recorded media.
Her interests centre on the process through which physically generated sound becomes “music”: how form, repetition and perception interact, and how musical structures can be bent,
eroded or reinforced over time without relying solely on overt emotional effect.
Her work often focuses on detailed control of harmony, timbre and micro-gesture, favouring small shifts in texture over large dramatic arcs.
Kurihara also holds a traditional kouta (classical Japanese song) title.
This background informs her interest in the resonances and frictions between different musical systems, and in how inherited forms can be re-examined within contemporary practice.
As a classically trained East Asian musician working within a Western-derived systems of tuning, harmony and musical form,
she is attentive to what may be lost or overlooked when local traditions are marginalised, and to how those traditions might quietly re-shape the way musical structure and sensibility are understood today.

東京を拠点に活動する作曲家・編曲家・ピアニスト。桐朋女子高等学校音楽科を経て桐朋学園大学音楽学部ピアノ科卒業。中井信仁にピアノを、石岡久乃、藤井一興、田崎悦子にアンサンブルを師事。
卒業後の 2018 年より作曲活動を開始し、クラシックの伝統において培われた構造への意識と感性を基盤とした実践を展開している。
委嘱作品はアニメ、映画、広告音楽など多岐にわたり、朝日新聞、TOYOTA USA、Georgia Coffee、Hermès をはじめとする国内外の企業・ブランドや広告代理店のプロジェクトに参加。
2019 年より牛尾憲輔のアシスタントとしても活動し、アニメや映画の音楽制作に携わりながら、自身のソロプロジェクトも継続している。
商業案件と並行して、ピアノ、エレクトロニクス、録音素材などを用いた長期的な個人作品や短いスタディの制作にも取り組んでいる。
関心の中心にあるのは、物理的に発生した音がどのようなプロセスを経て「音楽」となっていくのかという点であり、形式や反復、知覚がどのように相互に作用しうるか、
また、感情効果に依拠することなく、音楽的な構造が時間のなかで曲げられ、侵食され、あるいは強化されていくあり方である。
和声、音色、微細なジェスチャーのコントロールに焦点を置き、大きな劇的展開よりもテクスチャーの小さな変化を重ねることを重視している。
日本の伝統芸能である小唄の名取でもある。
この背景は、異なる音楽体系のあいだに生じる共鳴や摩擦、そして継承されてきた形式を現代の実践のなかでどのように捉え直しうるかという関心につながっており、
西洋起源の調性・音律・形式といった音楽体系のなかで訓練を受けた東アジアの音楽家として、周縁化されたときに見落とされてしまう地元の伝統や、その伝統が音楽の構造や感性の捉え方をささやかに変形させていく可能性に注意を向けている。
